The Galata Tower stands on the hill of Galata in Beyoğlu, on the north bank of the Golden Horn. The Genoese raised it in 1348 as Christea Turris, and at 62.6 metres it has dominated the skyline for nearly seven centuries — watchtower, fire-lookout, prison and now museum. You walk past the ticket-office queue, take the lift up through the museum floors, and climb the final short spiral stair to the 360° gallery, where the whole of historic Istanbul opens out: the Golden Horn, the old city across the water, and the Bosphorus running out to the Sea of Marmara.
